Doll
10.5 high x 5 inch diameter
These dolls came as a result of Lukacs visits to Riga and St.
Petersburg in 1991.He painted the prototypes for each doll and commissioned
a traditional Russian doll craftsman to produce the series in Moscow.
Each piece is made of wood from the Ural Mountains of Russia (which
has a distinctive minty smell). They are bored by hand and painted,
so that each doll is slightly different. Each type is an edition of
twenty, and there are no artist's proofs. Besides the political overtones,
we have enjoyed the more humorous elements of these Lukacs creations,
especially the fact that the dolls undress to a little penis in the
center. Important details such as tattoos, hand gestures, add to the
overall effect. Each piece is signed and numbered by the artist on the
outside doll, and sequentially numbered therein.
