Our fourth 2012 Studio Edition feature is Dale Chihuly’s Scarlet Leaf Ikebana. It isn’t often that we have the opportunity to offer an Ikebana Studio Edition. Dale Chihuly’s first, and only other, Ikebana edition was the 2002 Philodendron Ikebana which has long since been retired.
Chihuly takes his inspiration from the Japanese art of floral arrangements giving his glass Ikebanas simple yet elegant shapes. Delicate stems are balanced by sturdy symmetrical vessels mirroring the minimalism of the traditional floral compositions.

Scarlet Leaf Ikebana, 2012
Handblown studio Edition glass, approximately 11 inches tall
$7,100 US*
Ikebana is a disciplined Japanese floral art with an emphasis on balance, harmony, and form. These beautiful, minimalistic flower arrangements made an impression on Dale Chihuly during a number of his visits to Japan in the 1980s. Feeling as if he had pushed the scale of his earlier Venetian series as far as possible, Chihuly began experimenting with deeper and broader vessels, stripping them bare of embellishments and adding stems with flowers and leaves. The result was Chihuly’s Ikebana series, echoing the essential aesthetics of the traditional ikebana while marked by the artist’s revolutionary use of colour, distinctive lines, and the strength of pure form.
The 2012 Studio Edition Scarlet Leaf Ikebana is a two-piece composition that illustrates the simple elegance of this Chihuly series. Patches of silver and gold and opaline spots adorn the amber vessel, establishing an elemental ground for a graceful, coiling stemmed leaf. The scarlet lead, ribbed and touched with discreet streaks of gold, emerges from the case with a seducing curved equilibrium and rests ion a perfectly balanced point. The combination is one of serene rapport.
The Scarlet Lead Ikebana, signed by the artist and measuring approximately eleven inches high, is accompanied by a custom-designed Plexiglas display case and a copy of Chihuly Gardens & Glass. This 192-page, full-colour publication includes beautifully photographed images of Chihuly’s exhibit at Garfield Park Conservatory and other outdoor installations.
The 2012 Scarlet Leaf Ikebana Studio Edition exemplifies a timeless grace and sophistication.

The recently opened SMASH Gallery of Modern Art is reminding Vancouver what hip really means. Long time DFG friend, Art Perry’s “HIP! Portraits of cool”, which opens Friday April 27th, is comprised of over thirty photographic portraits of counterculture icons that span the past forty years. Mingling amongst the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Louise Bourgeois, Nick Cave and Lady Diana (yes, Lady Diana) are some local names. We are particularly looking forward to seeing the photographs of young members of Futura Bold (Graham Gillmore, Derek Root, Angela Grossmann & Attila Richard Lukacs) as they prepared for their 1985 exhibition “The Young Romantics” at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

“There is something about the endless variation and mutation in Chihuly’s work that gives it a tangible affinity with natural selection, particularly the plant world,” says Tim Richardson, Garden and landscape critic and historian. This organic affinity between plant life and Dale Chihuly’s work is particularly pronounced in his Persian series, which has become an integral feature of the artist’s garden installations throughout the world. The fluid, rhythmic patterns of the Persians may be found floating in ponds amid a variety of extraordinary flora and fauna or suspended over towering cacti, bathed in brilliant coloured light, allowing the artist a compelling correspondence with nature.
In celebration of the April 1st release of Dale Chihuly’s 2012 Studio Editions we are featuring one of his new editions each week. Profiled this week is the Aqua Blue Macchia. The closed mouth vessel pays its dues to Chihuly’s early Macchia forms. Unlike the large flared lips of more recent forms, the series started off smaller and more enclosed. Much like the Aqua Blue Macchia, these early pieces are recognizable by their richly spotted exteriors and contrasting interior colour which have become the defining elements of Chihuly’s Macchia series.
We would like to congratulate Angela Grossmann and Chris Woods on their new exhibitions. Both Angela and Chris started their careers with Diane Farris Gallery and we continue to enjoy watching their work develop. We wish them great success with these new bodies of work.

When we heard that a white Seaform was being introduced with the 2012 Studio Editions, we knew it was going to be a great addition to Dale Chihuly’s collection. Over the years some of our favourite works have been Dale Chihuly’s white pieces. Stripped of vibrant colours the white pieces allow the delicate shapes and lines to shine through. This is especially true with Chihuly’s Seaforms. Soft white ribbons and clear glass combine in a sophisticated elegance that is timeless yet still feels contemporary. Continue reading
