Press Release

The Primary Mark
July 16 – August 8, 2009
Opening reception, Saturday, July 18, 1 – 3 pm

Diane Farris Gallery is participating in the city-wide event Drawn with an exhibit called The Primary Mark. The title represents the idea of drawing as the foundation of many art practices, including painting, printmaking, sculpture and architecture. Since its inception in 1984, Diane Farris Gallery has a history of supporting and promoting drawing by such well-known and influential artists as Angela Grossmann, Attila Richard Lukacs, Graham Gillmore, Vicky Marshall and Neil Wedman.

The Primary Mark is a group exhibit of works by gallery artists and from the Seymour Collection. Among them are the colourful and stylish compositions of John Dennison from his recent exhibit Tableaux Printemps and new expressionist drawings by Nick Lepard. Amy Alice Thompson presents a panel of eight whimsical Bird Girls pieces. Exquisite realistic works by Sam Lam and Neil Wedman, the latter based on a 1927 séance with Houdini and Margery, will also be featured. The exhibit includes early works by several important Canadian artists.

The Drawn festival in Vancouver, BC showcases artwork created with drawing media in numerous Vancouver-area galleries and museums. The first celebration of its kind in Canada, it includes a program of free lectures, gallery tours, exhibition openings, artist talks and a symposium.
