August Selections
August 13 – September 5, 2009
The upcoming group exhibition August Selections at Diane Farris Gallery includes artwork by gallery artists Angela Grossmann, Nick Lepard and Sara Genn, as well as Gu Xiong, Grace Gordon Collins and Elzbieta Krawecka.
A new large-scale painting by Angela Grossmann is featured together with a series of her piano scrolls and a piece from the Seymour Collection. While still a student at Emily Carr College (now University) of Art and Design in 1985, Angela Grossmann was introduced as one of the Vancouver Art Gallery's "Young Romantic" painters most likely to influence the course of painting in that decade. Over the past 20 years, Grossmann has continued to be a significant force in the Canadian art world.
Vancouver artist Nick Lepard has rapidly emerged as a promising young painter. Lepard first exhibited with Diane Farris Gallery in 2006 while still a student at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. He immediately gained recognition for his large-scale self-portraits and expressionist portraits of friends. Included in the August exhibit are three works by Nick Lepard: a charcoal drawing, the previously unshown painting “When I Was an Animal”, and a preview of “Telefire” from his upcoming solo show Chronophobic (November 5 – 26, 2009).
Sara Genn’s series of canvases Sixty Days of Light is the result of a studio swap in 2008 that gave her the opportunity to paint in Lucca, Italy. Inspired by the bright light and dramatic shadows of Tuscany, Genn reduced and quieted her palette and simultaneously amplified her brushwork in silhouetted forest scenes. Whereas the works in Perfect Places to Hang Out in the Woods explore colour theory through the forms of Inuit Inukshuks and Japanese Obos. These minimalist watercolours encourage the viewer to contemplate the simplistic beauty of colour and form. Originally from Vancouver, Sara Genn currently lives in New York.
