Natty Saidi

Press Release
Echoes of Sentiment
April 20 – May 6, 2006
Opening Reception Thursday April 20, 6-8 pm

Natty Saidi is known for tranquil still life paintings that encapsulate quiet moments. The Israeli-born artist is fascinated by figure-to-ground relationships and the subtle interplay of light with texture. New works in Echoed Sentiments express themes of love and reflect on her early roots in Israel.

Saidi draws her subject matter and then partially paints it to capture a sense of the creative process. The images, with their focus on natural, simple beauty and organic subject matter, evoke memories of the small farming community where she grew up surrounded by orchards and fields. Looking at the fruit and painting it, she remembers walking through the mud, picking the fresh warm fruit and eating it.

Saidi is the daughter of the prominent Israeli sculptor and muralist Moshe Saidi. She moved to London with her family during the 1960s, then studied at the Avini Institue of Fine Art in Tel Aviv between 1975-77 before spending two years as a graphic artist in the Israeli Army. Saidi attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia on a scholarship during 1981-82. Since 1994, she has been a full-time artist in Vancouver, BC.

The artist will be present at the opening.
