Artist Wil Murray wins honours in RBC painting competition

Montreal artist Wil Murray has received an honourable mention in the 10th annual RBC Canadian Painting Competition, the largest of its kind in Canada.
His painting, Sexe Maniac Maniac Maniac Maniac Maniac, was honoured with a $15,000 prize.
Vancouver's Jeremy Hof was the national winner. His work layer painting red was given the $25,000 top award. Amanda Reeves of Oakville, Ont., also got an honourable mention for her painting Untitled 08 2008.
For the 10th anniversary only, a special $7,500 prize was given to 12 semi-finalists. The winning submissions will be shown at the Musée d'Art Contemporain de Montréal, Oct. 9 and 19.
About the RBC Canadian Painting Competition
Established in 1999 and the largest competition of its kind in Canada, the RBC Canadian Painting Competition is a tribute to Canada's artistic talent.
The goal of the competition is to support and nurture Canadian visual artists early in their career by providing them with a forum to display their artistic talent to the country and hopefully open doors to future opportunity.
An investment in Canadian culture and the visual arts community, the competition will award one national prize of $25,000 and two honourable mentions prizes each of $15,000 and exclusive to the occasion of its tenth anniversary, the 12 semi-finalists will each receive a prize of $7,500.
Along with past winners, the winning paintings of 2008 will become part of RBC's Canadian art collection composed of more than 4,000 works of distinguished art collected over the past hundred years.
Various paintings from the RBC collection have been exhibited in museums, enabling more Canadians to enjoy these wonderful works. The 12 semi-finalists' paintings will become a part of the Canadiana Fund's Crown Collection. |
