November 5 – 28, 2009
Artist Reception: November 5, 6 – 8 pm
In a new series titled Chronophobic, Vancouver painter Nick Lepard expands his repertoire to include large-scale portraits of women as well as the male subjects and self-portraits for which he has become well known. By taking simple photographs then duplicating, rotating and re-scaling them, as well as varying the exposure, hue and saturation levels, Lepard charged his source material with new geologies of multi-layered information. In paintings described as “vigorous visual sensations”, his fractured gestures and marks have an extraordinary cohesion.
Lepard’s chronophobic, beyond-time-and-place sensibility is informed by his reading and reflections on notions of perception and subjectivity, and by the ways in which advancing technologies force us to renegotiate our ideas about the external world. He is particularly engaged by authors of literary and non-fiction works that explore science, philosophy, mythology and history.
Diane Farris Gallery has represented Nick Lepard since 2006. He immediately gained recognition in group exhibitions for his large-scale self-portraits and expressionist portraits of friends. Lepard graduated with a BFA from the Emily Carr Institute (now University) of Art and Design in May 2008. His first solo exhibition was held the following month. In 2008 he was featured in Futures Market, Vancouver Magazine and 20 Under 29, West Ender; and was interviewed by Paul Grant, CBC. Nick Lepard is the signature artist for the 2009 Art For Life Gala auction. |
