Lisa Klapstock: Liminal
Essays by Scott McLeod, Alison Nordström
Introduction by Marilyn Smith, Stuart Reid, and Jann LM Bailey
Published by Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Tom Thomson Memorial
Art Gallery, and Kamloops Art Gallery
The Kamloops Art Gallery, the Southern
Alberta Art Gallery, and the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery
are pleased to announce the launch of Lisa Klapstock’s
monograph, Liminal. Published on the occasion of liminal,
Klapstock’s nationally touring exhibition, this sumptuous
book is an exploration of Klapstock’s artistic oeuvre
of the past decade and documents two substantial bodies of
work: the laneway project and Ambiguous Landscapes. Series
included in the exhibition liminal, such as Living Room and
Threshold, are supplemented in the monograph with images from
earlier works, such as Crossover, Panorama, and Excavations.
Exquisitely designed by Bryan Gee, Liminal contains not only
high-quality reproductions of Klapstock’s lens-based
work, but also in-depth essays written by Scott McLeod and
Alison Nordström.
With a focus on everyday places and their human occupation,
Klapstock’s work explores the liminal zone between abstraction
and realism, revealing the complex relationship between photographic
depiction and visual perception. She is interested in the
mechanisms of seeing and the role of the camera in affecting
and challenging the way we see and experience our surroundings.
Her photo-based artworks are both richly colourful and rigorously
intellectual.
Born in Kamloops, B.C., Klapstock studied at Simon Fraser
University and New York University’s Tisch School of
the Arts. Currently living in Toronto, Klapstock has exhibited
her work in North America and Europe at venues including George
Eastman House and The Centre for Photography, New York; Gallery
TPW, Toronto; Centre Vu, Québec; Presentation House
Gallery, Vancouver; The Diane Farris Gallery, Vancouver; The
Odense Photo Triennial and Gallerie Image, Denmark; and the
Musée de la Photographie, Belgium.
