Diane Farris Gallery is delighted to present a Sneak Preview of the work of two young painters Jesse Garbe and Jim Park. Currently students at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, we feel that this is the first what will prove to be many exhibitions for these very talented painters.

Sharing an ECIAD studio space, they both paint with oils on canvas.

Jim Park (Class of '03) will show a large self-portrait along with large-scale landscapes - both rural and urban. Emigrating from Korea at the age of 13, Park became "interested in painting as a way to express [himself] in this new and different environment." Over time, the reflection changes and insight about that specific time is altered. This shift brings the fading memories to light. The construction of equivalent form and colour - creating a resemblance of this transparent recollection is the basis for his current body of work.

Jesse Garbe's self portraits and portraits of his immediate circle of family and friends are painted in a style influenced by the old Masters - especially Rembrandt van Rijn. His other inspirations are German printmaker Kathe Kollwitz and British painter Euan Uglow. A life-size portrait of his parents pays homage to Russian constructivist Nikolai Kolli's 1918 sculpture "The Red Wedge Cleaving the White Block". Garbe is Class of '04.
