Currelly In the fall of 1995 my daughters and I spent three months living in Mexico. Many of the inland parts of that beautiful mountainous country reminded me of the Arctic: dry, bare-bones land full of subtle colour, myth and memories. The most striking difference was a lack of water. I started thinking about the fact that when flying a float plane anywhere in Northern Canada or Alaska I can always see some body of water which, in a pinch, could be a landing spot. A very reassuring situation. Without those thousands of lakes and rivers the North would be a barren wasteland. With them, it is both physically and spiritually life-sustaining. Pure, clean water was the inspiration for the work in this exhibition. |
