A Spontaneous Piece of Performance Art!

Moments prior to the doors opening on his May 1998 exhibition in our gallery, Dale commented on the way the bright sunshine was flooding through our windows and casting a pattern on the raw cement floor. He looked at me and said " I'm going to do a painting on these windows" He asked for "one tube of every colour you can get". Within the hour he was at it...squirting the paint directly onto the windows from the tubes, then tossing them across the space into a box to the cheering of the gathered crowd. For three hours, to the blaring sounds of his requested "Beach Boys" tunes, Dale entertained us with his lyrical movements as he created a work of art that looked fabulous and different in the day and night light and from the inside and out. The event and the results drew critical raves as well as international attention ... much to the Landlord's displeasure....and order to have it removed immediately. We refused. The resulting fuss was picked up a delighted local and international media. "Local landlord gives world famous artist a bad review," read the Vancouver Sun front page headline on April 1st, ( ! ) much to everyone's amusement!

Scraping it off at the end of the exhibition was a massive effort and, if you visit the gallery, you will still see slight evidence of this joyous "happening" on the floor.

We hope you enjoy the pictures....note the pattern on the floor as the sun moves on.
