Mille Fiori Installation, 2003
Chihuly, a native of Tacoma, Washington, is currently garnering praise for his installation "Mille Fiori" at the inaugural exhibition of the new Tacoma Art Museum building which opened May 3rd. "Mille Fiori" installation heralds the artist's long relationship with Tacoma and its museum. The work shows a keen sense of place, taking its cues from the light and architecture of the museum's largest gallery designed by acclaimed architect Antoine Predock. Like the large, sculptural work Chihuly has installed throughout the world, this work is specific to the building and far different from all previous work. Coupled with Tacoma Art Museum's extensive display of its collection of Chihuly's early work in glass, the museum will offer visitors a broad view of the artist's career. The exhibition will run through October 12, 2003

In 2001 the Victoria and Albert Museum, in London, curated the Chihuly exhibition at the V&A. His first major glasshouse exhibition, Chihuly in the Park: A Garden of Glass, was displayed at the Garfield Park Conservatory, Chicago. The Chihuly Bridge of Glass in Tacoma, Washington, was dedicated in 2002 and has become a huge tourist attraction for the City of Tacoma.

Chihuly's work is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Palais du Louvre. He has been awarded seven honorary doctoral degrees, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist grant. In 1992 he was named the first National Living Treasure in the United States

Several Chihuly films will be shown during the exhibition and all books, catalogues, studio editions and videos will be available for purchase.
