May 6 - June 3, 2000
Opening: Saturday, May 6, 2-4pm
Once again the extraordinary Dale Chihuly will
be filling the Diane Farris Gallery with his astounding works of glass.
His last exhibition (in May 1998) drew critical raves as well as international
attention when he spontaneously decided to paint the expansive windows
of the gallery... much to the Landlord's displeasure. The resulting fuss
was picked up a delighted international media. "Local landlord gives world
famous artist a bad review," read one headline on April 1st, much to everyone's
amusement!
The month long exhibition, which can be viewed on-line
at, will be of large and small-scale installations and objects utilizing
the entire gallery space to present exquisite examples of his series of
"Baskets" and "Soft Cylinders" set amongst their inspiration - Dale’s
personal collection of Northwest Coast Indian Baskets, a spectacular Chandelier
as well as Persian, Reed and Macchia installations.
A beloved resident of Seattle and co-founder of the
internationally renowned Pilchuck Glass School, Chihuly was the first
artist in the United States to be honoured with the designation of "National
Living Treasure". He is one of only four Americans to have been honoured
with a solo exhibition (1986) at the Louvre in Paris.
In July of 1999 Chihuly mounted his most ambitious
exhibition to date: Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000. With support
teams from Seattle and Israel he created 15 installations within the stone
walls of an ancient military fortress, currently known as the Tower of
David Museum of the History of Jerusalem. In September of 1999 Chihuly
traveled to the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, to unveil an 18’ chandelier
gracing the main entrance of the Museum. Chihuly culminated the year by
designing two large scale sculptures for the White House Millennium Celebration.
Recent architectural commissions include the Fiori
di Como glass ceiling at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas - 2,100 square
foot ceiling made up of 2000 pieces of glass, some of which were blown
in Vancouver during the unveiling of his outdoor sculpture at the Residences
on Georgia in May,'98 and installations of dazzling, large scale sculptures
and chandeliers at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island, Bahamas.
Chihuly videos will be shown in the gallery during
the exhibition on HDTV, including "Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000"-
recently released & aired on PBS.
