The Arid Edge of Earth

The Arid Edge of Earth presents desert photographs by Roberta Bondar taken between 1991-2003. The photographs were taken in deserts around the world – from the Arctic in the far north to the American southwest, from Mojave Desert in California to Libya and Egypt. The Libyan images, many of which were shown in the exhibit Ancient Ruins and Desert Dunes at London’s prestigious Hoopers Gallery last year, were among the first taken in the area when Canada established diplomatic relations with Libya in 2002. The catalogue includes images of the Great Sand Seas of Ubari in Libya; the eroded rock formations of the Acacus with their prehistoric drawings; and the ruins of ancient Roman cities Sabratha and Leptis Magna.

Canada: Landscape Of Dreams

It is the great Canadian cliché to rhapsodize over our northern landscape as stunningly beautiful, richly varied and deeply reflective of the drama of four distinct seasons. Yet there is a compelling reality behind the myth: it is, quite simply, true. Never has this truth been more perceptively recorded than in the careful, superbly crafted, large-format photographs of Roberta Bondar.

One of Canada's great scientists and first astronauts, she has traveled the length and breadth of the country from Haida Gwaii to Terra Nova, Ellesmere Island to Point Pelee, capturing some 10,000 images of Canada's finest natural landscapes.

This little book is a love letter to Canada, combining forty new images with the words of distinguished Canadians. There are eloquent contributions from Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Susan Aglukark, Oscar Peterson, Bryan Adams, Douglas Coupland, Iona Campagnolo, Gordon Pinsent, Pam Wallin, Deepa Mehta, Paul Gross and Peter Gzowski and many more, all accompanying images resonant with their sentiments. The result is an elegant, full colour, beautifully designed and inspirational volume that conveys something fresh and memorable about the place we call Canada.

Touching the Earth

Roberta Bondar's voyage as an astronaut aboard the space shuttle Discovery was the realization of childhood dream for the Canadian scientist and doctor. In this wonderful book, she shares her remarkable journey, providing us with an opportunity to feel connected with our planet in a very special way.

Touching the Earth is an amazing visual and written testament to the beauty and variety of Earth. From breathtaking photographs of the planet taken from space - including some never-before-published NASA images - to her own stunning photographs of life on Earth, Dr. Bondar contrast her two views of "home," Her powerful message of hope for our environment will change the way you think about humanity's relationship with the planet

In this book Dr. Bondar explains some of her experiences in this sense, and above all, she shows us how our planet is from orbit. The work, lavishly illustrated as it is, attains its objective: to alert us as to the fragility of our Earth and the dangers threatening it. Nobody but an astronaut can tell us in a better way about the impression caused by some of the ecological disasters, so easily identified from space. And nobody but an astronaut can alert us about the impact such disasters are having on our planet, as well as the course these things are taking.

The text is highly divulgative and very pleasant to read. Its brevity and the graphic wealth accompanying it is a perfect example of the wonderful contribution that the astronauts can give so as to approach the space sciences to the general readership, and tell us what science can contribute to our awareness as a species and as inhabitants of this world. Bondar also has time to tell us her opinion about the future initiatives to explore space and she also gives us a very comprehensive bibliography for those readers wishing to study in depth some of the aspects dealt in the book.
